Today in our Nutrition 101 blog we are going to talk about sweets and treats!
It’s that time of the year we feel EXTRA motivated to work on our health and wellness journey! Oftentimes this includes drastic changes, one of which is commonly avoidance of any sweets or treats!
What if I told you that you are actively setting yourself up for failure?
A study from the National Institutes of Health regarding restricting sugar from the diet states, “Many people try to lose weight by periodically forbidding themselves from eating certain foods. But depriving yourself of tasty food can backfire…It can activate the brain’s stress system, causing anxiety and withdrawal-like symptoms, and leading you to overeat the forbidden foods when you get a chance.” In other words, the well known restrict-binge cycle.
So, how can you change this narrative?!
By tuning into your hunger and fullness cues, getting to understand your body, and creating a more positive relationship with food.
Step #1: LEARN HOW TO MINDFULLY ENJOY THOSE TREATS!
If you are anything like me, you may be thinking “if I have one… I’ll keep going back for more!” I hear you. If this is you, try this:
When having a treat, first plan for it! When you make the time to sit down for the treat as planned, pair that with a hot cup of tea or lemon water. Not only will this help to fill you up, but it will also remove the taste from your mouth. This may make it easier to have one and move on with your day.
Step #2: Continue to find YOUR balance
Stop doing drastic things to lose weight. We know it doesn’t work because you already tried that. Instead, find a professional to help you find the right balanced path that you can stick to for the long game!
